At Cornerstone Dental, we’re always striving to be the very best dentist in Lincoln Square, and we want to do everything that we can to help you enjoy great oral health throughout your lifetime. After all, there are many reasons to keep your teeth and gums healthy. A great smile and the self-confidence that goes with it, avoiding toothache and discomfort, and the prevention of gum disease and other health problems are among the reasons to pay close attention to your oral health.
These are some of our favorite suggestions to help you enjoy healthy teeth and gums from childhood to old age.
Start Children Early
To head off childhood problems, you should begin your child’s dental care when the first tooth appears. Wipe each tooth with a clean, damp cloth or soft brush. At around age two, let children start brushing themselves under your supervision.
Seal Off Trouble
Permanent molars begin coming in at age six, and thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth can help prevent decay in the pits and fissures.
Use Fluoride
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent decay. Three out of four Americans drink fluoridated water, and fluoride is also available in many toothpastes and mouthwashes. To avoid white spots on the teeth, however, use fluoride sparingly with young children.
Brush and Floss
Always brush and floss your teeth twice a day! Thoroughly rinse your toothbrush after every use, and change brushes 3-4 times a year. Remember, plaque can also build up on your tongue, leading to bad breath and other oral health problems. Gently brush your tongue each time you brush your teeth.
Limit Sugary and Acidic Foods
Sugar converts into acid in your mouth, which can erode tooth enamel. Acidic fruit, teas and coffee can also wear down enamel, and you should consume all in moderation.
See Us At Least Twice a Year
While your everyday care is crucial to your oral health, it’s also extremely important to see us at least twice a year for a thorough checkup and tooth cleaning. For the best dental care in Lincoln Square, call us today for an appointment.
