Dental Implant FAQs

Interested in getting dental implants at Lincoln Square? If so, here are answers to some FAQs.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small, titanium posts that replace the roots of missing teeth. They’re inserted into the jawbone during a minor surgical procedure performed in the dental office. Afterwards, a porcelain tooth crown is attached to the implant. In some cases, the implant needs several months to fuse with the bone before it’s permanently crowned.

How many teeth can be replaced with implants?

Any number can be replaced with implants. And an implant isn’t needed for every missing tooth. Two implants can support a removable lower bridge, and only four implants can provide a full set of top or bottom teeth.

What happens if missing teeth are not replaced?

Your jawbone will shrink, and the shape of your face will change, causing you to look prematurely old.

Is implant surgery painful?

Local anesthesia is used during the procedure, and most patients tolerate the surgery easily. Post-operative pain can usually be managed with over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen.

Can my body reject implants?

Technically, titanium implants cannot be rejected as they contain no living cells or genetically coded material. But it’s possible for the implant to fail to integrate with the jawbone if an infection develops due to lack of good oral hygiene or if the implant is subjected to biting forces too soon. These complications are rare, however, and implants achieve a success rate in excess of 95%.

How long does the surgery take?

The implants can often be placed in as little as 30-60 minutes depending on the location and the number of implants needed.

What if there is not enough gum or bone tissue for the implant?

Your clinician may determine that a graft is needed if there isn’t enough bone or gum tissue.

Is age a factor?

No, there’re no age restrictions for dental implants. Even children who’ve lost permanent teeth can get implants.

How long will implants last?

They can last for many years if properly cared for with daily brushing and flossing, along with regular dental checkups. Many implants have been in place for over 40 years.

Are implants covered by dental insurance?

Policies vary, but many cover at least a portion of the procedure. Ask your insurer what coverage they provide.
